IDC Preparation

SDI Online E-learning

You will receive the SDI elearning code for the IDC as soon as you sign up, which you must complete online before the IDC begins. The simplest approach to prepare for the SDI IDC is to just be organised.

You are now on your way to becoming a professional SDI Dive Instructor. Professionalism denotes being prepared, organised, presentable, and informed in your field.

You are required a have a full set of dive equipment.


If you have access to a pool, then get into it and get wet... practice makes perfect.

The SDI IDC 24 skills are identical to the 24 Divemaster skills you learned during your Divemaster training. The following are the components of the skill circuit:

  • Equipment assembly, adjustment, preparation, donning and disassembly

  • Pre dive safety check (ABCDE)

  • Deep water entry

  • Buoyancy check at surface

  • Snorkel to regulator & regulator to snorkel exchange

  • Five point descent (ORCESD)

  • Regulator recovery and clearing

  • Mask removal, replacement and clearing

  • Air depletion exercise and alternate air source use (stationary)

  • Alternate air source ascent

  • Free flowing regulator breathing

  • Neutral buoyancy, using both methods oral & low pressure inflation

  • Computerized Ascent

  • Controlled Swim Ascent (CSA)

  • Hover 

  • Underwater swim without mask

  • Remove & replace weight system underwater

  • Remove & replace scuba unit underwater

  • Remove & replace scuba unit on the surface

  • Remove & replace weight system on the surface

  • Tired Diver Tow

  • Cramp Relief

  • Snorkel clear using the blast method.

  • Snorkel clear using the displacement method.

Course prerequisites:

  • Minimum age 18
  • Certified diver for a minimum of 6 months
  • Proof of 100 logged dives completed in a number of different environments with varying depths
  • Be certified as a SDI Divemaster, SDI Assistant Instructor, or equivalent
  • Provide proof of current CPR, first aid and oxygen provider
  • Have all required diving equipment (please contact me to discuss specifics and options)
  • Have a current medical less than 12 months old
